The term 'factory wheel' refers to the wheel-rims that are made by the manufacturer of any make, model, and year of automobile, in the car-plant of that company. They are sometimes called stock-wheels. When each new vehicle leaves the manufacturer's plant on completion, they are fitted with a set of factory wheels.
They are also known by the name OEM which simply stands for Original Equipment Manufacturer. This is just a fancy name and acronym for the same thing. In fact, the original manufacturer is possibly the best place to start if you need to replace a chrome wheel or the whole set. It is possible that you can still get original replacement parts, even if they are for a different year or model. Of course, this will depend on the age of the car.
These financially challenging times seem to be bringing lots of older vehicles out of wherever they have been resting. Auto renovation can be quite an expensive business, as you might have found out already. Factory-built parts are cost-effective so you might find that they are the best choice from a value for money perspective. There is still some choice with factory rims; many are available in either alloy or steel. Steel could be more original and they are stronger but heavier. Alloys are light and so they stay in balance better than steel ones, protecting the custom chrome rims and saving you money.
