Countryman and Juke – Quirky new SUVs fun-damentally different
Article by Cooleric2000
This week we're going to take alook at two very similar vehicles that take styling in newdirections for their respective manufacturers. This is not adirect comparison to determine which vehicle is better than the other butrather alook to see whichdesign is moresuccessful in creating anew product for their market. The niche in question is the compact SUV, abit of an oxymoron at first glance, but who says that asport-utility vehicle has to be huge? BMW'sMini and Nissan's Juke certainly don't think size is everything. Admittedly these two look more like squabbling anime characters than battling superheroes, but even cartoon characters have feelings, right?
Both test cars were close to base models, neither had the all-wheel-drive option, both had 1.6-litre four-cylinder engines and both were equipped with manual transmissions and both spelled their names.
DESIGN:
Starting with a clean sheet of paper, the Nissan Juke has the wilder exterior by far and the most controversial. It's quirky and more than a little odd with its bulbous front fenders and stacked lighting clusters. "Who designed it, Kermit The Frog?" Ha, ha, ha . yes, I've heard that one several times, today. I won't deny that I am still unsure about the front end of the Juke but it does turn heads and get smiles from other drivers and pedestrians.
Those lights frame a black grille with a chrome "U" at the centre that holds the Nissan badge. The bottom edge of the front fascia is pulled upwards to the bumper giving the impression that the Juke is biting its lip. The black grille under the bumper is made up of three large oval openings and holds two fog lights at the outer edges.
The drama continues in the side profile dominated by gigantic wheel arches filled with 17-inch aluminum-alloy wheels with P215/55R17 tires. The side windows taper in height as you move toward the rear, while the tail lights wrap up from the back to the top of the rear end, much like the turn indicator lamps that sit on top of the front fenders. There's nothing else quite like it on the road.
The rear of the Juke features a wraparound rear window that flows down to the sides, slightly reminiscent to a mid-1960s Corvette. Those wild LED-powered tail lights a reonthe back, the sides and even the tops of the fenders and that's what's unique with the Juke. The designers didn't feel constrained to keep things on one plane or another. The front flows up the hood and along the sides, the rear flows up the hatch and along the sides.
The Mini Cooper Countryman is anew sibling to the wildly popular Mini. There a resome hints of the shared genetics but more striking a rethe differences.
The front headlights are not large ovals like the Mini, nor is the grille the familiar arched shape. It's more of a trapezoid and more upright to match the squared-off hood. All exterior dimensions a relarger, making this Mini not so mini anymore.
The biggest difference between the Cooper Countryman and other Minis is noticeable in the side profile. It has four doors and gained 15 inches in length, 10 inches in width and an inch in height! The Cooper Countryman is one inch shorter in length than the Juke.
