It's been a long time coming, but the Chevrolet Camaro is only a few months away from being launched in the UK. We've driven American versions of the coupe before, but this latest version boasts a bespoke suspension and steering set-up for UK and European roads, and the styling has been revised, too.
The wedge-shaped front end - with its squared off, deeply recessed headlights and purposeful bonnet bulge - is as striking as ever, while at the back the UK version gets a unique set of LED tail-lights that mirror the lights up front, and a set of chrome exhaust tips similar to those seen on the Corvette Z06.
The 426bhp 6.2-litre LS3 V8 under the bonnet is also derived from the Corvette, and it sends drive to the rear wheels via a six-speed manual gearbox. THe thumping V8 dominates the driving experience - it rumbles ominously on start-up, and the mountain of torque it offers means that the Camaro's straight-line performance certainly lives up to its menacing looks.
If you go for the automatic version, you get a a clever fuel management system that shuts down half of the cylinders under light loads which helps to improve fuel economy, but this manual version returns just 20mpg, and has substantial emissions of 329g/km.
On the move, the Camaro isn't an easy car to drive. The heavy-duty clutch and clunky gearchange instantly alert you to the power on tap, while the steering lacks much in the way of finesse or feedback, and that's despite Chevy updating it for the UK with a weightier feel. Effective Brembo brakes are fitted as standard, but you need to push the pedal a long way before they start to bite.
Most of Chevrolet's revisions have focused on the suspension, and this car's ride and handling is a significant improvement over the US model. Engineers tested the Camaro at the Nurburgring in Germany, and changes include an entirely new front axle, retuned front and rear dampers, new bushes, and solid anti-roll bars to increase stiffness and high-speed stability. The updates also improve the ride, and while the Camaro still feels firm, it's much more stable than before, and is less flustered by mid-corner bumps. There's plenty of grip too, but the numb steering doesn't encourage you to explore the Chevy's limits.
In the UK the Camaro will only be available with left-hand drive, and in just one trim-level, the fully-loaded SS version, which comes with an impressive array of equipment, including 20-inch wheels, a full leather interior and premium stereo. And with a price tag of £34,995, there aren't many other cars that can offer similar performance for the money.
But despite undercutting all its rivals by a big margin, there are some areas where the cheapness shows. The steering wheel, for example, is the same as on any other Chevrolet model - that's disappointing, given the amount of bespoke switchgear in the rest of the cabin. Nice interior details such as the standard head-up display and ambient cabin lighting go some way towards making up for the cheap feeling plastics, but the Camaro's interior isn't its best feature.
The 320-litre boot is reasonable, but the tight back seats are more for occasional use, thanks to the low roofline and space taken up by the front seats. Rear visibility is poor as well, which might make it tricky to drive on narrow British roads.
Overall, the LED lights are widely used most new cars such as LED Dome Lights, LED Daytime Running Lights, and will come out with even more innovation in the future.
